Welcome to ICOHTEC 2026
The 53rd Annual Meeting of the International Committee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC) will take place in Alexandroupolis, Greece, from 8–11 October 2026. Hosted by Democritus University of Thrace in collaboration with the Laboratory of Technologies, Research & Applications in Education and the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, the conference brings together researchers from around the world to explore the role of technology in shaping human societies.
This year’s theme, “Engaging the History of Technology. Bridging Disciplines and Perspectives for Global Challenges” invites critical reflection on how technological histories intersect with today’s global challenges — from climate change and environmental injustice to political polarisation and artificial intelligence. By bridging methodologies, disciplines, and perspectives, the conference aims to highlight how understanding technological pasts is essential for navigating contemporary issues.

Conference Theme:
Engaging the History of Technology. Bridging Disciplines and Perspectives for Global Challenges
The theme of the 53rd ICOHTEC Annual Meeting, “Engaging the History of Technology. Bridging Disciplines and Perspectives for Global Challenges” invites critical reflection on how the history of technology can illuminate contemporary global challenges. Climate change, environmental injustice, political polarisation, and artificial intelligence intersect across historical, cultural, ethical, and technological domains. Understanding how societies have imagined progress, structured power, exchanged knowledge, and interacted with environments offers essential insights for navigating today’s crises.
The conference encourages contributions that bridge methodologies, disciplines, and perspectives—from the everyday and local to the geopolitical and planetary. We welcome work that connects archival practices, digital humanities, material and intangible culture, pedagogy, and public engagement to demonstrate the relevance of technology’s pasts to present and future challenges.
